Understanding Your Drug Coverage 2027 Plan Year

What Medicare Part D covers in 2027.

Medicare Part D helps pay for prescription medications through private plans approved by Medicare. Each plan has its own covered-drug list, pharmacy network, and cost rules. Knowing what to check can help you make a more informed choice.

$2,400

2027 Part D out-of-pocket limit

After you reach the annual limit in qualifying out-of-pocket spending, you pay $0 for covered Part D drugs for the rest of the calendar year. Premiums and non-covered drugs do not count toward this limit.

$35 or less

One-month supply of each covered insulin product

You pay no more than $35 for a one-month supply of each Part D-covered insulin product, with no deductible for that insulin. Your cost may be lower.

Start With Your Medications

The formulary: your plan’s covered-drug list

  • Check every prescription by its name, dosage, and quantity.
  • Review whether the plan requires prior authorization, step therapy, or quantity limits.
  • Confirm how your preferred pharmacy affects your costs.
  • Review annual notices and coverage updates rather than assuming your prescriptions stay the same.

Understand Your Share

Drug tiers influence what you pay

Plans often group covered drugs into tiers. The names, number of tiers, and cost sharing vary by plan.

Generic medications May include preferred and non-preferred generic tiers.
Brand-name medications May have different costs based on preferred status.
Specialty medications Often include higher-cost drugs with specific coverage requirements.

These are examples, not a universal tier structure. Check your plan’s formulary for exact placement and costs.

Compare Your Options

Generic and brand-name coverage

Part D plans cover a range of generic and brand-name medications, but no plan covers every prescription. Coverage depends on the plan and the drug’s approved use.

If your medication is expensive or not listed, ask your prescriber about covered alternatives and your plan’s coverage-exception process.

Check Before You Fill

Some medications follow different rules

  • Over-the-counter medications generally are not covered as a Part D benefit.
  • Some drugs are covered under Part B rather than Part D, depending on how and where they are used.
  • A drug’s purpose and approved indication may affect coverage.
  • A medication missing from the formulary may require an alternative or an approved exception.
